1. How old someone born in 1940 is

A birth year on its own has two right answers, and which one applies depends on the day. Anyone born in 1940 turns 86 during 2026: they are 85 until their birthday arrives and 86 for the rest of the year. Without the month and day there is no way to narrow it past those two numbers, which is what the console above is for.

As of September 3, 2026 that is between 31,292 to 31,657 days lived — the low figure belongs to a birthday on 31 December 1940 and the high one to 1 January 1940. The spread is one year wide because a birth year is one year wide.

Each row is a statement about a calendar year rather than a moment in it: the age is reached on the birthday, so for most of the year one of the two numbers is already wrong. This is the single most common source of off-by-one age errors in forms and spreadsheets — subtracting birth year from current year gives the 86, and it is only correct for the part of 2026 after the birthday.

2. The years a 1940 birth reaches each milestone age

Every year below is simply 1940 plus the age, so the arithmetic is not the interesting part — the point is that the years are fixed while the thresholds attached to them are not. What an age entitles you to varies by country and changes over time; the calendar does not.

Pew’s oldest defined cohort: born between the start of the Great Depression and the end of the Second World War, into the lowest birth rates the century recorded before the post-war surge.

The years either side are worth knowing before anyone argues about the label: Greatest Generation ends in 1927 and Baby Boomer begins in 1946. A birth in 1927 and a birth in 1928 are 12 months apart and land in different cohorts, which is a good reminder of what these boundaries are: a convention for comparing survey data, not a property of the person.

Different organisations draw them differently — market-research firms, national statistics offices and newspapers all publish variants, and the post-Gen-Z boundary is not settled at all. If something consequential turns on a cohort, use the birth date.

4. Calendar facts for 1940

1940 was a leap year. The rule is that a year is a leap year when it divides by four, except centuries, except centuries that divide by 400 — so 2000 was one and 1900 and 2100 are not. The next after 1940 was 1944. 1 January 1940 fell on a Monday; for the weekday of a specific birth date, enter it above.

Because 1940 was a leap year, a 29 February birth date is possible — and it needs a convention, since three years in four have no such date. This calculator uses 28 February, so a leaper born in 1940 is exactly 86 on 28 February 2026. Several legal systems instead use 1 March.
