1. What a GPA actually is
A grade point average is a credit-weighted mean of grade points. Each course contributes its grade points multiplied by its credit hours — that product is the course's quality points — and the GPA is the total quality points divided by the total credits.
The weighting is the part people skip. An A in a one-credit seminar and an A in a four-credit lab are not worth the same to your average. Averaging the letters instead of the quality points is the most common way a self-calculated GPA disagrees with a transcript:

49.3 ÷ 14 = 3.52. The unweighted mean of those four grade points is 3.50 — close here, and much further apart once credit loads vary. Nothing is rounded until it is displayed, which is why the Unrounded tile is there: a genuine 3.495 is not a 3.50, and some scholarship thresholds are decided on exactly that difference.
This page starts from the letter grade a course has already been awarded. Working out that letter in the first place — the weighted average of homework, mid-terms and a final, and the mark you still need on the final to reach a given grade — is the grade calculator. The two chain together: a course grade becomes a letter, the letter becomes grade points, and the grade points feed the average above.
2. The 4.0 scale, plus and minus grades, and A+
On the standard US scale a plain letter is a whole or two-thirds step and each ± variant moves it by 0.3:

A+ is treated as 4.0 here, not 4.3. Most institutions cap the scale at 4.0 and award A+ as recognition rather than extra points; a minority run to 4.3. If yours does, its registrar's figure will sit slightly above the one shown here for any term containing an A+.
You can type whatever your report card uses. The grade box accepts a letter
(A-, b+), a percentage (87 or 87%) or grade
points directly (3.7). A bare number of 5 or less is read as grade points and
anything above it as a percentage, since 5.0 is the highest scale in general use.
3. Weighted GPA: honours, AP, IB and dual enrolment
Switch the scale to weighted and the ceiling rises to 5.0, with a bump added to each course by rigour before the average is taken:
- Regular — no bump.
- Honours — +0.5, so an A becomes 4.5.
- AP, IB and dual enrolment — +1.0, so an A becomes 5.0.
Bumped grades are capped at the ceiling, which means an A+ in an AP course cannot exceed 5.0. This is the most widely used weighting pattern in US high schools, and it is a convention, not a standard: some districts bump AP by 0.5 rather than 1.0, some weight only the letter and not the ±, and some cap the weighted GPA below 5.0. Your school's published policy wins over any calculator.
4. Cumulative GPA, and the averaging mistake
To carry a record forward, enter your GPA so far and the credits so far those grades cover. The calculator converts them back into quality points, adds this term's quality points and credits, and divides once at the end.
Averaging two GPAs together is only correct when both terms carry identical credit loads, and
it is otherwise wrong in a direction you will not notice. A student with 48 credits at 3.42 who
takes 14 credits at 3.52 has a cumulative GPA of
(3.42 × 48 + 3.52 × 14) ÷ 62 = 3.44, not the 3.47 that averaging the two figures
suggests. The bigger the gap between the two loads, the bigger the error.
Grades that carry credit but no grade points — pass/fail, credit/no-credit, withdrawals, incompletes and audits — are counted as excluded credits and left out of the mean, which is what registrars do. They still occupy your transcript, and many programmes cap how many pass/fail credits count toward a degree, so the tile is there to keep them visible rather than invisible.
5. Working backwards from a target GPA
Enter a target GPA and the credits still to come and the calculator solves for the average you would need across that remaining work:
required = (target × (current credits + future credits) − current GPA × current credits) ÷ future credits
Two things fall out of that formula and both are worth knowing early. First, the more credits you have already banked, the more remaining credits it takes to move the average — a cumulative GPA gets progressively harder to shift, which is why first-year grades matter more than they feel like they should. Second, the requirement can exceed the ceiling. If the calculator says you need a 4.3 on a 4.0 scale, the honest answer is that the target is not reachable in that many credits, and it says so rather than clamping the number to 4.0 and implying otherwise.
